about

Marshall has always said that his music is representative of self-therapy, and no other song on this album drives that theme home more than, "Going Back." Marshall takes us through pivotal moments in his upbringing, and shares an insight into the complex relationship he shared with his parents, but especially his father. This song is about mending old scars that have been held onto for far to long. This is closure.

lyrics

Hook:
No I’m not going back to the way things were
No, No I’m not going back,
No, No
No I’m not going back to the way things were
No, I’m not going back
No I’m not going back

Verse:
Picture a clumsy little fat kid
Never really all that eloquent
Nah, relying mostly on his common sense
So ridiculed for all the money that he’s never had
His parents work hard, though,
Just to keep him and his sister
Dad and Mom, yeah, you know they’d lie awake
And spit that angry vitriol
That shit was so hard to take
Though it wasn’t their fault, man,
He’s about to fall off, damn,
Would they even notice if one night he was just gone
But even when those times grew tough, you know
You know he couldn’t give in
And, no he wouldn’t give up
You know it wasn’t enough for him to just walk away from everything
Even though he’s still feeling those memories in his bad dreams
Thinking back that shit don’t seem so far away
Nah, but man these scars don’t look so deep today
Yeah, and now I know one thing’s for sure
No matter what will happen
Man, that past is out the door

Hook:
No I’m not going back to the way things were
No, No I’m not going back,
No, No
No I’m not going back to the way things were
No, I’m not going back
No I’m not going back

Verse:
But now at fifteen years old
He’s standing toe to toe with his old man
Neither one of them really quite understanding, Goddamn
That all the pain inflicted
It was never intended
It’s just a product of a father’s malicious vision
Which is a symptom of his alcoholic tendencies, yeah
You know that shit he never meant to be
But eighteen years of melting metal took his soul
You know that shit can make you grow so old and cold
And now it’s hard to be so mad at someone you love
But if he’s putting hands on your mother
You know a son has to put up gloves
It’s usually over before shit began
But even one set of blows
Will make that shit so hard for amends, damn
You know I love you man, I always will
But why’d you have to drink so much
Man, I promise I never will
Yeah, yeah my son will never feel this pain
That’s a promise, Dad
Here comes the rain

Hook:
No I’m not going back to the way things were
No, No I’m not going back,
No, No
No I’m not going back to the way things were
No, I’m not going back
No I’m not going back
